ACASAirborne Collision Avoidance System
AccidentAn unplanned event or series of events resulting in death, injury, occupational illness to people, or damage to the environment.

ADFAutomatic Direction Finder. Previously known as radio compass.
ADIAttitude Direction Indicator. Artificial horizon.
AECMAAircraft European Contractors Manufacturers Association
AFCSAutomatic Flight Control System.
AileronControl surfaces on (usually) outer sections of wing trailing edges, controlling bank and roll of aircraft.
Air Traffic ClearanceApproval by Air Traffic Control for aircraft to taxi, takeoff, climb, enter controlled airspace, descend or to land.
Air Traffic Control (ATC)System of directing all aircraft operating within designated airspace by radio. Divided into sectors such as Tower (aerodrome control for takeoffs and landings), Departures, Control (en route aircraft), and Approach.
Airspeed Indicator (ASI)Instrument measuring speed of aircraft through air, usually expressed in knots.
AirworthinessThe condition of an item (aircraft, aircraft system, or part) in which that item operates in a safe manner to accomplish it intended function [SAE ARP4754 p75].

The ability of an air system to operate without significant hazard to aircrew, ground crew, passengers (where relevant) or to the general public or friendly military personnel over which such airborne system's are flown. The concept of airworthiness defines the condition of an air system/subsystem, and supplies the basis for the judgement of its suitability for flight operations in its intended role and application, in that it has been designed and manufactured, and is managed, maintained and operated, to approved standards and limitations, by competent and approved individuals, who are acting as members of approved organizations, and whose work is authorized, certified as correct, and accepted on behalf of the Air Force [SAAF].
ALARPAs Low As Reasonably Practicable. Defines the region in which the risk taken is acceptable only if justified by the benefits, and where the cost of further risk reduction would exceed the benefits.
